Credible Transition Plans Drive India's Net Zero Financing

Credible Transition Plans Drive India's Net Zero Financing

India's net zero transition will require vast investment. Credible corporate transition plans can help investors assess risks and direct capital effectively, write Shantanu Srivastava and Tanya Rana.

The scale of funding needed to decarbonize India's economy is enormous. Estimates suggest the country must mobilize trillions of dollars across energy, industry, transport, and agriculture in the coming decades. Public money alone cannot meet this demand. Private capital must fill most of the gap, but investors need confidence that their money will support real change rather than vague promises.

That confidence depends on credible transition plans. A credible plan goes beyond a headline target. It lays out specific steps, timelines, and capital expenditure. It explains how a company will shift its operations, reduce emissions, and manage the risks of a changing policy and market landscape. It also shows who is accountable and how progress will be measured.

For Indian firms, the pressure is rising. Global investors increasingly screen for climate risk. Lenders want to know whether a borrower's business model survives the shift to clean energy. Without clear plans, companies face higher borrowing costs or lose access to capital altogether.

Credible plans also help avoid greenwashing. When companies publish detailed roadmaps, analysts and regulators can test whether the numbers add up. This transparency builds trust and attracts long term investment.

The task is not simple. Many Indian companies lack the data, expertise, or internal systems to produce robust plans. Policymakers and financial institutions can help by setting standards, offering technical support, and rewarding credible action.

If India gets this right, transition finance can flow at the speed and scale required. The alternative is a slow, uneven shift that leaves both investors and the climate exposed.
