Colombia's Finance Minister Miguel Gomez has unveiled a proposed national budget of 634.9 trillion pesos, roughly 203 billion US dollars, for the upcoming fiscal year. The figure marks a 14 percent increase over the previous year's spending plan. The largest driver of the jump is the government's debt service, which has ballooned by 55 percent to 155.4 trillion pesos, or about 49.8 billion dollars. That single line item now consumes nearly a quarter of the entire proposed budget, a level that underscores the mounting pressure on public finances.
During the presentation, Gomez stressed that the spending plan prioritizes fiscal responsibility while still protecting social programs. He noted that the higher debt payments are largely a result of previous borrowing and the impact of interest rates on the national debt. The government is expected to face tough negotiations in Congress, where lawmakers will scrutinize the balance between debt obligations and funding for health, education, and infrastructure. Some legislators have already signaled they will push for cuts to administrative costs and for stronger revenue measures to ease the burden on the budget. The proposal is the first major fiscal test for the administration as it seeks to stabilize the economy without stalling growth. Final approval is expected later this year after committee reviews and floor debates.
