Gov’t approves Smotrich ally Israel Malachi as Finance Ministry director-general

Gov’t approves Smotrich ally Israel Malachi as Finance Ministry director-general

The government has approved the appointment of Israel Malachi as the new director-general of the Finance Ministry, a move that has drawn sharp criticism from opposition figures. Malachi is a close associate of Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, raising concerns over the politicization of a key bureaucratic post.

Malachi previously served as the treasurer of the Yesha Council, the administrative body that oversees over 40 Israeli settlements in the West Bank. His background in settlement governance and his direct ties to Smotrich have led opponents to argue that the appointment prioritizes ideological loyalty over professional merit.

Critics say the role of director-general is meant to be apolitical, managing the ministry's day-to-day operations and budget. They worry that Malachi's appointment could shift the ministry's focus toward settlement expansion and other hardline policies. Supporters, however, defend the choice, noting that Malachi has extensive experience in financial management and public administration.

The approval comes as the government continues to push forward with a controversial judicial overhaul and budget negotiations. Malachi will replace the previous director-general, who stepped down earlier this year. His tenure is expected to begin immediately, with a mandate to oversee the ministry's operations and implement Smotrich's economic agenda.
