Minneapolis Public Schools, the third-largest district in the state, is under fresh financial pressure after disclosing a $4.1 million error in its budget records. The mistake, which came to light during a routine internal review, has deepened worries about the district's ability to manage its money accurately. In response, the district has brought in an outside consultant to help oversee and tighten its finance operations.
This is not the first time the district has stumbled on budget matters. Over the past year, officials have had to correct several smaller accounting issues, and the latest figure is by far the largest. The error reportedly stems from a misclassified expense in the facilities department, though district leaders have not yet said whether it was a simple bookkeeping slip or something more systemic.
The news has rattled school board members and parent groups, who are already frustrated by past shortfalls that led to cuts in classroom supplies and staff training. Some board members are now calling for an independent audit, separate from the district's usual annual review. The superintendent has pledged full cooperation, saying the consultant will also train existing finance staff to prevent future mistakes.
State education officials are monitoring the situation closely. While no formal sanctions have been imposed, the district must submit a corrective action plan within 30 days. For now, families are left waiting to see if this latest error will mean further reductions to school programs or if the new oversight will finally steady the ship.
