Mark Paoletta, the Deputy Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, has assumed the role of Acting Director. The transition comes after Russell Vought's tenure in the position came to an end. Paoletta now leads the agency on an interim basis, stepping into the top spot during a period of significant transition for the federal watchdog.
The change in leadership was confirmed through an official notice sent to staff. Paoletta, who has served as the agency's number two official, now takes on the expanded responsibilities of overseeing the bureau's daily operations and strategic direction. His appointment as Acting Director is effective immediately, following the conclusion of Vought's service.
This leadership shift places Paoletta at the center of the CFPB's ongoing work in financial regulation and consumer protection. The agency has been a focal point of political debate in recent years, with its structure and authority frequently under review. Paoletta's background includes extensive legal and policy experience, which he brings to the role as the bureau continues to navigate its regulatory agenda.
The CFPB has not yet announced a timeline for a permanent appointment to the Director position. In the meantime, Paoletta is expected to maintain the agency's current course while managing its day-to-day functions. Staff were informed of the change in an internal communication, which underscored the continuity of the bureau's mission during the transition.
