San Jose high school first in nation to pilot new AP financial literacy courses

A San Jose high school is breaking ground as the first in the country to pilot a new Advanced Placement course focused on financial literacy. Silver Creek High School has been selected to field test the College Board's AP Career Kickstart program, which aims to give students practical money management skills before they graduate.

The new course moves beyond traditional economics or personal finance electives. It covers topics like budgeting, investing, credit scores, taxes, and long-term financial planning. School officials say the goal is to prepare students for real-world decisions they will face right after high school, whether they go to college or enter the workforce.

Students involved in the pilot program have reported feeling more confident about handling their own finances. One senior mentioned that learning about compound interest and student loan repayment options helped her rethink her college savings plan. Teachers at Silver Creek have also noted high engagement, with many students saying the material feels directly relevant to their lives.

The College Board plans to use feedback from Silver Creek and a handful of other test sites to refine the curriculum before a wider national rollout. If successful, the course could become a standard AP offering, giving students across the country a chance to earn college credit while learning skills that are often left out of traditional high school education.
