Six Money Rules for Going Freelance Without Burning Your Savings

Six Money Rules for Going Freelance Without Burning Your Savings

Leaving a steady paycheck for self-employment looks liberating until the first slow month arrives. Freelancers gain control over their schedules, but they also absorb costs that employers once covered, from health insurance to software subscriptions. Without a plan, the freedom can turn into financial stress fast.

The first step is building a cash buffer before quitting. Most advisers suggest saving enough to cover six to twelve months of living expenses. Freelance income rarely arrives on a predictable schedule, and a cushion keeps you from accepting bad clients out of panic.

Next, separate business and personal accounts. A dedicated account makes tax time simpler and shows exactly what the business earns and spends. Track every deductible expense, including internet, equipment, and a portion of rent if you work from home.

Set aside money for taxes with every payment you receive. Since no employer withholds for you, quarterly estimated payments are your responsibility. A common approach is to move 25 to 30 percent of each invoice into a separate savings account.

Price your work to cover more than hours. Your rate must include taxes, insurance, retirement contributions, and unpaid time spent on admin and marketing. Many new freelancers undercharge because they compare their rate to a salaried wage.

Finally, diversify your client base. Relying on one big client recreates the same risk you left behind. Several smaller clients smooth out income swings and give you leverage to raise rates.
