BANGKOK - Thailand has officially presented its latest trade proposal to the United States, as confirmed by Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira on Monday. This move comes as the nation seeks to avert significant tariffs on its exports, which are crucial to its economy. The U.S. government has indicated that it may impose a steep 36% tariff on imports from Thailand unless a mutually agreeable reduction can be negotiated before the July 9 deadline. This date marks the end of a 90-day period during which tariffs were temporarily capped at a baseline of 10% for most countries.
In 2022, the United States represented a significant market for Thailand, accounting for 18.3% of its total shipments, which amounted to approximately $54.96 billion. The outcome of these negotiations could have substantial implications for Thailand's export-driven economy, highlighting the importance of maintaining strong trade relations with its largest market.
