The connection between financial knowledge and overall student wellness is becoming harder to ignore. Studies keep showing that students who understand budgeting, credit, and loans handle the transition to life after graduation with far less stress. In response, many universities have rolled out dedicated financial education initiatives. The University of Michigan took a step in that direction when it introduced its Financial Education program in 2024. That was a good start. But it should not stop there.
Right now, the program exists, but its reach is limited. Many students do not know it is available, or they assume it is only for those in the business school. That is a missed opportunity. The university has a real chance to expand this effort, making it a visible part of the student experience from freshman year through senior year. That means more workshops, more one-on-one counseling, and embedding financial topics into required courses or orientation sessions.
The payoff would be significant. Graduates who leave with a clear grasp of student loan repayment, rent budgeting, and retirement basics are better equipped to make sound choices. They avoid the common pitfalls of high-interest debt and impulsive spending. They also report lower anxiety about money, which directly affects academic performance and mental health.
Michigan has the resources and the student demand to make this program a model for other schools. It just needs the commitment to treat financial education as a core part of student support, not a side offering. A little more investment now could save students from years of financial strain later.
