The flow of tariff refunds from the US government has slowed sharply, with new figures showing the Treasury took in more money from tariffs than it returned to importers for the first time in months. The shift marks a turning point in a refund program that has distributed roughly $166 billion to companies that paid duties later ruled unlawful or excessive.
During the peak of the refund effort, payouts routinely outpaced new tariff collections, sometimes by a wide margin. That pattern has now reversed. Officials say the backlog of eligible claims has shrunk considerably, and the pace of new filings has fallen as most affected importers have already submitted their paperwork.
The change matters for both businesses and the broader budget picture. Companies that relied on refunds as a source of cash flow will need to adjust. At the same time, the government's tariff revenue line is looking stronger, easing some pressure on deficit figures that had been inflated by the refund surge.
Analysts caution that the trend could still shift. Pending court cases and unresolved eligibility questions could produce another wave of claims. For now, though, the numbers point to a program moving into its final phase rather than its busiest one.
