Warsh likely to side with financial markets over Trump as Fed rate hike expected

Warsh likely to side with financial markets over Trump as Fed rate hike expected

Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh finds himself caught between two powerful forces barely four months into his tenure. Financial markets widely expect the central bank to raise interest rates, while President Donald Trump has pushed for rate cuts or for leaving them unchanged. Economists anticipate that when Warsh and his fellow policymakers meet on Wednesday, they will side with the markets rather than the White House.

Warsh has largely boxed himself into a rate hike after delivering a prominent speech last month. In that address, he warned that inflation remains well above the Fed's 2 percent target and suggested that higher borrowing costs may be necessary to bring prices under control. His comments signaled a firm commitment to the central bank's inflation-fighting mandate, even as political pressure mounts from the administration.

The decision carries significant weight. A rate increase could slow economic growth and draw sharp criticism from Trump, who has repeatedly argued that lower rates would boost the economy. However, backing away from the hike could damage the Fed's credibility on inflation and unsettle investors who have already priced in a tightening move. Warsh now faces a defining test of his leadership, balancing data-driven policy against political expectations.
