Duterte's Legal Team Expresses Shock Over Ruling on Financial Records

Vice President Sara Duterte's legal counsel expressed surprise on Tuesday after the court issued its ruling on her financial and tax records, stating they were "shocked" that the decision largely went against their arguments.

The lawyers said they had prepared for various outcomes but did not expect the ruling to cover such broad aspects of the financial documents in question. They emphasized that while they respect the judicial process, the decision raises serious concerns about the handling of sensitive personal and financial information.

"We are shocked that most parts of the ruling turned out this way," one of the defense attorneys told reporters after the hearing. "We respect the court's authority, but we believe there are legal grounds that were not fully considered."

The ruling pertains to the release of Duterte's financial records and tax documents, which have been a point of contention in the ongoing impeachment proceedings. The Vice President's camp has argued that the documents contain privileged information and should not be made public without proper safeguards.

Legal analysts noted that the decision could have significant implications for the impeachment trial, as the financial records may be used as evidence by the prosecution. The defense team indicated they are reviewing their options, including a possible appeal.

Duterte herself has not commented publicly on the ruling, but her lawyers said she remains confident in the legal system and trusts that her rights will be protected throughout the process. The trial is expected to continue in the coming weeks, with both sides preparing for further arguments.
