Lawry Miller, the founder of Teachers and Nurses Mortgage & Finance, has spent years navigating the financial services industry. But unlike many advisers who drift into broking as a second career, Miller's path was shaped by a growing frustration with the banking system itself.
Miller began his career in banking, working across several major institutions. Each role, he says, only reinforced his belief that the traditional bank model was failing customers. "I saw how rigid policies and sales targets often got in the way of doing what was actually right for the borrower," he explains. "The more I worked inside those walls, the more I realised that true advice could only come from outside them."
His move to mortgage broking was not a sudden leap but a gradual realisation. He wanted to offer clients something banks rarely could: genuine choice. For Miller, broking meant he could compare dozens of lenders, not just one. It meant he could advocate for teachers, nurses, and other professionals whose income structures or employment types did not always fit neat banking boxes.
Today, Teachers and Nurses Mortgage & Finance focuses on exactly those clients. Miller says the decision to specialise came naturally. "I spent years watching hardworking people get turned down or offered poor rates simply because their situation was a little different," he says. "I wanted to build a business that understood them."
Looking back, Miller does not regret his time in banking. He calls it essential training. But he is clear on one point: broking is where he belongs. "Every stint in banking confirmed that this is where I could make the most difference," he says. "It is not just about finding a loan. It is about giving people a fair go."
