Colorado lawmakers managed to shield K-12 public schools from budget cuts this year, but a series of late revisions to the School Finance Act have left some districts on the Western Slope with smaller funding boosts than they originally anticipated. Governor Jared Polis has signed the bill into law, finalizing a complex budget package that attempts to balance state revenue limits with growing educational needs.
The final version of the act includes adjustments to how money is distributed to rural and mountain communities. Several Western Slope districts had counted on larger per-student increases to cover rising transportation costs and teacher salaries. Instead, the formula was tweaked to spread available funds more evenly across the state, which diluted the gains for some smaller, higher-cost areas. Lawmakers argued the changes were necessary to avoid deeper cuts elsewhere, but local superintendents expressed frustration that their unique challenges were not fully addressed.
Supporters of the bill highlighted that overall state funding for education remains stable, and that no district will see a reduction from last year's levels. The governor's office emphasized that the law prioritizes equity, ensuring that every student receives a baseline level of support. Critics, however, worry that the adjustments could widen the gap between wealthier Front Range districts and those in the western part of the state, where property tax revenues are lower and operational expenses are higher. The debate over how to fund Colorado's schools is expected to continue as the next budget cycle approaches.
